How to Choose a Marketplace Account Management Partner

A marketplace account management partner should make it clear who handles account operations, listings, advertising and performance analysis—and how the work will be reviewed. Before comparing fees, compare responsibilities, exclusions and reporting. Two packages with the same name may cover very different work.

That distinction matters when your business sells across several portals. A listing problem, an inventory issue and an advertising problem can all show up as disappointing sales. A useful partner helps separate those causes instead of treating every issue as a reason to spend more on ads.

Here is a practical way to assess the engagement before you commit.

Start with the problem you need solved

Write down the three account issues causing the most friction. Be specific: “Our catalogue has inconsistent pack sizes” is more useful than “We want growth.” So are “Nobody owns account notifications” and “Our monthly report gives sales figures but no explanation.”

Then identify the support you need:

  • A focused project, such as correcting a catalogue or setting up campaigns.
  • Ongoing execution for an existing marketplace account.
  • Coordinated management across operations, listings and advertising.
  • Analysis to help your internal team choose its priorities.

A narrow engagement can be appropriate when your team already handles most operations. Broader management is useful when tasks fall between people or decisions on one part of the account affect another. The right scope depends on the gap in your business, not on the largest package available.

Ask for a written responsibility map

“Full account management” needs a definition. Ask the provider to explain what it does, what it recommends and what remains your responsibility.

Work areaQuestion to resolve before starting
Account operationsWho monitors issues, follows up and approves responses?
Listing and cataloguingWho supplies product facts and images, and who prepares updates?
AdvertisingWho approves spend and who can change campaigns?
Inventory and fulfilmentWho supplies stock information and acts on shortages?
AnalysisWhich reports are reviewed, and what decisions follow?
EscalationsWho owns urgent issues when a task cannot be completed?

For example, the provider may flag a stock shortage, but your business may still need to replenish inventory. It may prepare listing copy, but you must confirm product specifications and substantiate claims. These dependencies should appear in the proposal.

Check marketplace coverage at the task level

Confirm both the portals and the services provided on each. Experience with one marketplace should not be presented as proof that every portal offers identical tools or workflows.

If your business uses Amazon, Flipkart and Meesho, ask how the team coordinates those accounts. If you are considering Myntra, Nykaa, quick commerce or international Amazon stores, ask what changes in access, responsibilities and reporting. Request a clear explanation of any limits before adding a channel to the agreement.

Avoid a proposal that lists many marketplace logos but leaves the deliverables undefined. Coverage is useful only when it connects with your actual operating needs.

Judge reporting by the decisions it supports

A monthly sales total is a starting point. A useful report explains what changed, what may have contributed and what should happen next.

Ask to see a blank or anonymised reporting format. Look for the period covered, a relevant comparison, the account issues observed and the action owner. Advertising reports should connect campaign activity with product availability and commercial objectives rather than present spend in isolation.

An illustrative action entry might read: “Confirm the pack-size mismatch on three listings; brand to validate the product data; catalogue team to prepare corrections after approval.” It is specific enough to follow up. “Optimise listings” is not.

Separate service fees from other costs

Clarify whether the quote includes advertising management, catalogue creation, photography or specialised projects. Record whether media spend is separate from the service fee. Ask about SKU limits, marketplace limits, extra work and the process for approving changes to scope.

Compare providers on the total engagement you need. A lower monthly fee may still be unsuitable if critical tasks are excluded; a larger package may be unnecessary if your own team already performs them well.

Establish access and ownership

Your business should retain ownership of its marketplace accounts and know how access will be granted and withdrawn. Where the platform supports delegated permissions, use an appropriate role for the work rather than sharing unnecessary access.

Ask how changes are approved, how work is documented and how an engagement ends. A handover should leave the business with an understandable record of work and outstanding issues.

Questions to bring to the first conversation

Prepare your marketplaces, product categories, active SKU count, operating challenges and recent reports. Then ask:

  1. Which of our problems would you address first, and why?
  2. What does your scope include and exclude?
  3. Which decisions require our approval?
  4. How will progress and unresolved issues be reported?
  5. What information do you need from us to do the work?

Be cautious about guaranteed sales or rankings. Account support can improve execution and decision-making, but demand, pricing, competition and availability still affect outcomes.

Discuss your account management requirements
